Kinja'd!!!

Lot of “want” posts going up today, so I’m jumping on the bandwagon. I really want to trade the Grom and my tax return for a Duke 390. I really shouldn’t but I really want to! Talk me out of it.

I’ll talk you out of getting a 390, and tell you to get the 690 ;-)

I really want one of those for the Land Rover, but they are so expensive and would only be used once in a while.

I know it, but I have discovered that I use them at least half a dozen times a year, so for me its worth it.

Lucky you. To pay my tax return bill I'm going to have to sell my motorcycle.

Do it. 390s ride like a big grom. But with real HWY speed

You know this is the wrong place to ask for help NOT buying a cool/fun/interesting vehicle? right?

I actually like both of those bikes haha. I don’t think I’d trade a Grom for a 390, because there are other (KTM even) machines I’d rather have, and the Grom is pretty nifty as a little bike, so I don’t really see much practical value in the trade up.

But, OP will live with this all day every day if they do so.

Save your money and get a fz 07. I was looking into these but backed out after reading some of the problems they come with. I got to sit on one and felt very cheap.

haha I do, but when it comes to motorcycles I’m not an adult. I managed a speeding ticket and an illegal pass (separate occasions) on the 12.5 horsepower Grom. Babysteps

I would love one, but I need to tread slowly. The Grom was my first on road moto, and in one season I managed 2500 miles, a speeding ticket, and a ticket for an illegal pass...

I was hoping you would chime in. A lot of people suggesting a 600 or better, friends included. However I manged to get myself into trouble on more than one occasion on a 125cc. So I think it best to go up in power a little bit at a time.

if they want to tell you what bike to ride, you can tell them to pay for it.

its not a big jump at all. and the 125 i think its more because of the size of the grom and tiny tiny wheels rather then speed.

390s are also a good starter bikes. little on the expensive side, but light, agile, and they have decent power. great for gymkhana BTW

lol I don’t really want to be talked out of it. It would just be nice to be able to go out and get it rather than go out and get it and feel guilty about things that I should have spent the money on.

It’s the same bike, though. It just looks a lot faster, because it's supersport style.

Hmm that might make sense, I am looking to get on the track (I’ve got a buddy that does a lot of track days on his R1). However track days probably wont happen this season for me, I’m just looking to be able to get on a highway if I want to, its terrifying on the Grom lol

Kinja'd!!! Shane MacGowan's Teeth > Tripper

For the record, since apparently it wasn’t clear, both those are good rides, and I responded the way I did as a joke.

That said, and skipping past the whole “it’s a motorcycle, so buy what turns you on, practicality is irrelevant”, and remember that this is from someone who totalled his own bike a month ago: if you can get in trouble on a Grom, you can get in trouble on anything. It isn’t the bike. If you don’t think you’re ready to step up to something bigger, that’s great, know yourself and your skillz. But how about a year from now? 2? 3? Will you want a 600 or a liter then? If so, maybe stick with the Grom for now, and wait for the bigger scoot, rather than an extra interim payment and depreciation cycle.

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > Shane MacGowan's Teeth

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s probably the best advice on this thread...to wait as I definitely will “grow out” of the 390. I haven’t had the Grom a year yet, so avoiding the payment and deprecation is a major plus. Really, the only thing that I don’t like about the Grom is that I can’t really ride with my buds. I can, but they have to wait for me on highway stretches and riding the Grom for more than a hour at a time is really taxing on the body.

Totaled the bike huh? I’m hoping/assuming that you escaped without any serious injuries? What’s next?

Some pretty ugly bruises, and a slightly crunched pinky, but nothing I even went to the doc for- so about the best possible outcome (good gear is worth the money, especially since insurance paid me back for it). Luckily I had two bikes (unluckily the good one died, and I’m stuck with the Harley), so it’s the Night Train until I finish paying that one off. After that, it’ll be another supersport, probably either a kawi 636 or another cbr.

Glad to hear your ok. Cool that insurance pays for the gear too. I spent almost half as much on gear as I did on the Grom itself lol. I’m near Philadelphia where RevZilla has one of their showrooms and I couldn’t help myself. Nice gear is nice!

Lol, mine did under the accessories coverage, you might want to check with yours before you bet on that haha.

Also- jelly of Revzilla proximity. Austin only has a couple of those “fun center” places and a Cycle Gear.

Yea RevZilla is awesome. They’ve got tons of stuff and the people that work there are super helpful.

Love Austin though, stayed with friends for F1 in 2013 and had a blast. It’s soo clean.

As a somewhat responsible adult that spent $100000+ on cars in last 17 years (all while looking at my second ever car still running just fine while my dad’s been driving it) - do you have credit card debt? Do you have have any outstanding bills that need to be taken care off? Can you afford to buy one, and not be in financial trouble if you lose your job and are jobless for say, 3 months? If so, do it, sweet bikes!
